Reader Solves Teichholz Mystery

I transcribe echocardiogram reports, and when I found two spellings for Teichholz (method or equation for calculating the ejection fraction), I wanted to get it right.

My trusty HPI Cardiology Words and Phrases had it with two H’s, but a sample report from the hospital had one H (Teicholz). It was not in my Dorland’s dictionary nor my Stedman’s Electronic Medical Dictionary.

I realized this man surely was a cardiologist and would have just one way to spell his name. I have a 1994 American College of Cardiology directory. In it, I found Louis E. Teichholz, MD, FACC. He is at Mt. Sinai in New York City. I called his office, and his secretary told me that this method is named for him. It is Teichholz and pronounced "Tish-holz."
